WIth a growing elderly population both here in the US and in Europe, it makes sense that the media would want to know what the older people like to read.

Researchers in Germany conducted a study that measured what young people (between 18 and 30 years of age) and older people (between 55 and 60 years of age) liked to read. The young people gravitated toward positive stories about other young people.

Over 72 million adults in the United States are obese, according to a Reuters article.

To put this in perspective, that is almost 27% of adults in this country. Obesity is defined as a body mass index of 30 or greater (a person who is 6 feet tall would weigh 221 pounds, a person who is 5 foot 3 inches tall would weigh 170 pounds).

A recent poll indicates that more Americans are drinking these days than at other times in the last 25 years. To be precise, 67% of adults surveyed said that they drank alcohol. People who reported drinking alcohol also tend to have a higher income and educational status than non-drinkers.

Shingles may be one of those things that we don't really think about much until we have it, at which point it is pretty difficult to think about anything else. Shingles is a very painful condition that is most common in people between the ages of 60 and 80. It is also preventable with a very available vaccine.

It turns out that people who endure abuse or neglect as children may have a shortened life expectancy, by as much as 7 to 15 years.

Scientists at the Institute for Behavioral Medicine Research conducted a study where they ran a number of tests on 132 adults who were age 70 and older. They measured levels of depression, health status and health behaviors, but also examined things that happened to them in childhood, such as abuse, the presence of serious marital problems between parents or whether there was mental illness or alcoholism in the family. Then they compared all of these results to results of blood tests.

Experts have long thought that Parkinson disease processes begin about 5 or 6 years before the classic motor symptoms (slowness, tremor, rigidity) show up.

Now it is looking like the disease begins its work at least 20 years before motor symptoms appear. The first symptoms may be things that are "annoying" but would not necessarily alarming, such as constipation and some sleep disorders. There may also be some problems with the sense of smell and depression before motor symptoms are present.

This makes a great deal of sense to me. Researchers from the New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey conducted a telephone survey of more than 5,688 residents of New Jersey between the ages of 50 and 74.
